Coconut Cronuts!!!!!

This morning was further proof I have the most amazing husband ever.  After sleeping in a little bit, I was woken up by D coming home and informing me that he had CRONUTS!!!!

After seeing the long line last week, I thought our quest for cronuts was over - but D being quite the early bird was motivated to go at 5:30am this morning and try again.  He said he was online by 6am and this was the scene:

It was actually pretty similar to what it looked like last week.  2 hours prior to the bakery opening, D was approximately 70th in line.  This means cronuts were guaranteed!  There were many other gorgeous pastries to choose from when D made it inside around 8:40.  In addition to our 2 coconut cronuts, D purchased 2 DKAs (“Dominique’s Kouign Amann") which are the caramelized croissants and also a signature item of the Dominique Ansel bakery.  Apparently these were all the rage back in 2011, but have now been slightly over shadowed to the cronut craze.

So here is our box of beautiful cronuts!

Eating them was a little messy - D's approach of just biting in created a bit of a messy eating experience.  I opened mine and ate it "bagel style."

Of course what you really want to know is - "How were the cronuts?!?!?!?!"   They are definitely unique and delicious - flakey and buttery like a croissant but with a sweet donut crisp and light creme. I thought mine was VERY buttery tasting, but D didn't notice that so much.  We definitely enjoyed them and are especially happy to know what all the excitement is about.  D definitely gets more street cred than I do though for actually being the one to wait for them.

Not to be forgotten is the DKA - we actually liked this better than the cronut.   It was perfectly light, sweet, and flakey but not as overpoweringly buttery like I thought the cronut was.

Anyone else try a cronut?  What did you think?
